Ray "Nippa", Nick & Brett Lacey

The History of Lacey Motorsport

It all started in the 1950’s when the Lacey Brothers Frank & Ray (Nippa) Lacey were terrorising the streets in their hot rods & motorbikes and pitching it sideways for the crowds at speedways all over Australia.

Saturday night regulars at Tracey’s speedway in Melbourne, the Lacey Brothers won more than their fair share of feature races in their T & B model fords which later became supermodifieds. The only one they feared was the cheif steward, Tom Lacey. With State & National titles achieved they retired when the Tracey’s speedway closed in the early 60’s. However on the night Ray won the Victorian title in 1959 his son Brett was born, perhaps a good omen for things to come.

In 1980 after years of racing motocross Brett Lacey started racing speedway in sedans and after one year joined with Ray to drive sprintcars for long time friend John Sydney & the Oval Track Racing Team. 3 great years with John Sydney & many feature races won, Brett accepted an offer from Bob Trostle to drive sprintcars in the Mid West of America from 1983 to 1986. With the knowledge & experience attained from time with John Sydney and in the U.S . Brett went on to design and build his own sprintcar chassis the ‘Baretta’.

In the 1986-87 season Brett became the first to win the National Title in a sprintcar that he designed and built himself. With a fare share of features and majors won, Brett retired from racing in 1998 to spend more time with a young & growing family.

In 1987 the year Brett won the National & Victorian Titles his son Nick was born - another good omen. After years in motocross, Go Karts and Formula Ford Nick Lacey becomes a ‘third generation sprintcar driver’ and begins his time in speedway with the re-forming of LACEY MOTORSPORT in 2008
